Understanding vs. Intuition
I’ve realized that most dog owners believe they understand their dogs intuitively. Because we love them, we assume we speak the same language. However, as a Canine Social Behaviorist, I know that dog behavior is rarely intuitive. What might look like a smile can be a sign of tension, and what looks like guilt is often just a dog trying to appease a person they care about.
Because our worlds are so different, I don’t just “watch” dogs—I evaluate them. A professional evaluation of this depth usually costs several hundred dollars, but I build this into my baseline process for every first visit. I don’t charge extra for it because I truly love what I do, and I believe that understanding your dog is the only way to provide a truly safe and restorative residency.
The Integration Protocol
I use a proprietary, three-stage system to introduce new guests to my environment. I never rush this process, and I never force an interaction. It’s about building trust from the first second they arrive.
1. Visual Threshold Assessment. Your dog begins the evaluation in a secure, quiet area. Through a transparent threshold, they are given the time to observe the rhythm of my home and the other dogs without any physical pressure. During this time, I am watching their visual thresholds and how quickly they recover from new stimuli.
2. Mediated Social Cues. I then introduce my resident expert dogs. These are calm, neutral dogs that specialize in polite social signals. I facilitate this through a safety barrier so I can monitor every subtle shift in body language and ensure both dogs feel completely secure.
3. Supervised Freedom. Only when I see clear signs of comfort do we move into a shared space. Your dog is always given the autonomy to choose their own distance. I make sure they can come as close or stay as far away as they want.
The Command Lexicon
I believe in respecting the work you’ve already done. Before your visit, I collect your Command Lexicon. These are the specific words you use at home. If you say “Lie Down” but I say “Settle,” your dog hasn’t failed; the communication has. I calibrate my audit to your dog’s existing vocabulary so they can succeed immediately.
The 45-Point Inventory
During their residency, I audit your dog across 45 specific behavioral markers to see how they handle real-world domestic life. This includes things like:
…along with 33 additional proprietary markers I observe during their stay.
The Proficiency Rubric
I rate your dog’s understanding of each cue on a professional 0 to 4 scale. This gives you a clear, quantifiable roadmap for their behavioral health.
At the end of the stay, I’ll provide you with a full write-up. This isn’t just a report card; it’s a diagnostic tool that helps me plan for your dog’s future stays and your training goals at home.
Always Within Reach
Because my home is a family environment, your dog is never on their own. My daughters and I work as a team to make sure someone is always within arm’s reach. Whether it’s rewarding a calm choice, providing a quiet break, or offering comfort through the night, I make sure no guest is ever left to fend for themselves. In my home, no one sleeps alone.
Request a Residency
I look forward to welcoming your dog and providing you with a high-substance behavioral audit.
YES, I’D LIKE TO BOOK A STAY I’D LIKE TO BOARD, BUT TRAINING ISN’T A PRIORITY(Note: I perform a behavioral evaluation for every guest to ensure the peace and security of my home.)
